Ombre & Rainbow

Pretty. Cute. Aweshome.
First time making it was a thrill, tiring, and fun process!!
Okay fun only comes when you actually ensemble the layers.
I've never get to see the end result when you actually cut the cake and feel that satisfaction like, ohhh my, i made that pretty colorful awesome wonderful cake. (mind the exxageration..teehee).
Well, not until recently, when i actually had to deliver a pink ombre rainbow to the party myself.
Nerve wrecking  experience i tell u, coz you'll be like staring at people eating it and squinting your eyes and give that 'tell me its good' look with super high hopes and puss in boots eyes while squinting it.
Well, your cake is good; they said.
Fuh! at least it didnt taste yucky due to the heavy coloring. Bahahaha.
The first time i tried making one was during 2011 Eid (when all the hips of rainbow cake just get to my vain and my hands were itching to go back home and start making one), and boy, that was a disaster.
I didnt have enought colors, so made two pink layers i think (i have a thing for pink). But the kids loved it, coz it was very very sweeeeeet. i wasted about almost 36 eggs for the swiss meringue buttercream. Haha, was a good experience though.

Disaster. Dont stare too long please.

Then, second time, it got better. Made it for an ex-boss' twins party. Girl, when you only have 2 tins, and gotta bake that 6 colors for two cakes when your oven can only fit that 2 tins you have (no offence there my loyal good oven you've been a really good service), it takes hours and hours and loads of dishes to do.
But it was all worth the effort.

Anor successfull attempt!

Then I started experimenting something new, inspired by miss raspberri cupcakes, who made the purple ombre with layers of jam. It looked soooo good, and yummy and not to mention, pretty.
First attempt, soft pink shades (like i said, i have a thing for pink).

Second, hot pink shades for the Hello Kitty themed party for Miss Adeena! The cake had a special flavored layers though! yummssss.
The recipe was from Whisk Kid. I love her experiments, and she is soooo young!!! only 21, and ienvyyoufamouskid. hehe.
Overall, after few rounds making it, it aint that bad.. it gets a bit messy when you need to divide and color those layers.
Oh, and i used Wilton's recipe for buttercream. So far i love this buttercream recipe the most, as it gets you to that white color that you want and also you can adjust the sugar level. I dont like sweet toppings, so i usually cut more than half of the sugar from the recipe for my icing.

Here is the recipe for the Rainbow Cake:
1 cup of butter
2 1/3 cups of sugar
5 egg whites
2 teaspoon vanilla essence
3 cups floor
4 teaspoon baling powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup milk (room temperature)
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple

1. Preheat your oven to 175c. Line and butter as many baking tins as possible, I use 8 inch tins.
2. Cream butter and sugar and wait till its fluffy.
3. Meanwhile, sift floor, baking powder and salt, and then whisk it all together.
4. Once your butter is fluffy, add in egg whites, one by one, ensuring that it is well mixed.
5. Add in vanilla essence. *you can change the flavor here, lemon, orange or raspberry*
6. Then, alternating between wet and dry, add the milk and floor in two parts.
7. Divide the batter equally into 6 bowls, and add in the colors to the shade that you like. *Note, if you want an ombre cake, you only need one color and have the batter in different shades!* *Another note: you can vary the number of layers, 6 is the maximum layers I've done so far, and i think it'll get thinner if you try to divide it more*
8. Bake! For about 20 minutes or so, or when the sticks comes out clean when you poke to test the cake. and bake and bake and bake till all colors are done.

For the buttercream:
1 cup of vegetable shortening
1 cup of butter
2 teaspoon of vanilla essence
Icing sugar to taste.

1. Cream shortening and butter till both are well mixed.
2. Add in vanilla essence. *you can vary this with other flavors*
3.Wait till its fluffy.
4. Add sugar to taste!

Wee!!! for the pink ombre, made it with raspberry buttercream for the inner layer.
See above the filling is a bit pinkish.
OMG. it was soooo good, not sweet, just nice. Yumsss. All you have to do is add in some raspberry preserves (jam kat supermarket tu) and done. You can also try other flavors, strawberry, blackcurrent..etc. Sinful.

Oh BTW, the cake is super tall like as tall as my 5inch heels! So better get that big box ya!
Look at this bambam! Adeena so geram!!
Goodluck!!

Trouble Topple

What happened last night:
I was holding the bag where a box of cupcakes was inside the bag.
Came back home after baking (I do not bake at home, the place where I bake is at a friend's), happy coz I managed to finish baking quite early, was almost 11 when I got myself inside the house, put the bag with cupcakes in it on the dining table, went to unlock my room, put my handbag down, went back out to put the cupcakes inside the fridge, AND......

YES. NO. NO. NO!!!!!
Half of the cupcakes toppled, with 1 or 2 went upside down.
Heart breaks, tears started to form.
I literally stand still with my mouth wide open for 15 seconds. My mind was spinning, thinking of ways to fix this. One of it, drive back to the baking place, and refrost the cupcakes, no early night for me.

Sigh, its a test from Him. I told my self. YOU CAN HANDLE THIS!
haha..drama drama..

Then slowly, calmly, I pick up the box, took out the cupcakes one by one, and then found out, only 3-4 need major fixing, the rest, it aint that bad. So, cancel the plan to go back and refrost the cakes. Fuhhhh.
In the end, managed to fix everything, and it all look 'okay' and cannn la...not so bad.

Moral of the story, be positive! dont freak out when things beyond your control happened, analyze and look at the damage first. If not, your blood will go upstairs, and it'll just ruin your day.
Be calm and fix the problem. Jangan menggelabah ok!

xoxo.
